How to use the Background Remover
How to remove a background
- Choose one or more photos. The background is removed automatically.
- Drag the slider to compare before and after. Use Touch up to fix any spots.
- Pick a background — transparent, a colour, a scene, blur or your own photo.
- Download a PNG (or JPG with a background), or all photos as a .zip.
How it works
In Best mode, an AI model called BiRefNet (MIT licence) finds the main subject in your photo; on computers without WebGPU, ORMBG (Apache-2.0) is used instead. Light mode uses U²-Net (Apache-2.0), a small model whose edges are then refined using your photo's own outlines. The resulting mask is scaled to your photo's full size and applied to the original pixels, so quality and resolution are unchanged.
Need a smaller file afterwards? Use the Image Compressor. To put photos into a PDF, use the PDF Converter.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The AI model runs inside your browser, on your own device. Your photos never reach SomethingTools or anyone else, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
Does it keep the original resolution?
Yes. The cut-out is applied to your original pixels, so the downloaded image has exactly the same width and height as your photo. Only the background changes.
What's the difference between Light and Best?
Light uses a small AI model (about 20 MB to download the first time, including the AI engine) that works smoothly on phones and older computers, and processes a photo in a second or two. Best uses a much larger model (about 140 MB the first time) that gives the sharpest edges on hair and fur, and is the default on computers. Phones start with Light, because phone browsers can close a page that uses too much memory. You can switch at any time.
Why does the first photo take longer?
The first time, your browser downloads the AI model from SomethingTools. It's kept by your browser, so after that photos start straight away.
Can I change the background instead of removing it?
Yes. Keep it transparent (PNG), or choose a solid colour such as white for ID and product photos, a ready-made scene, a blurred version of the original background, or any photo of your own.
The AI missed a spot. Can I fix it?
Yes. Open Touch up and use Erase to remove leftover background, or Restore to bring back parts of your subject. Undo with Ctrl/⌘ + Z.
Which photos work best?
Photos with a clear main subject: people, pets, products, cars, logos and objects. Very busy scenes, or subjects that are almost the same colour as the background, may need a little touching up.
